RYLA in District 7300 started as “Rotary Gateway Teen Leadership Institute,” a teen leadership camp that occurs over 5 days and comprises multiple workshops on topics such as self-esteem and team building.
The camp is for incoming high school seniors and occurs annually in June at LaRoche College. The cost is $400, split into $250 for a sponsoring Rotary club and $150 for the attending student. Though it is possible to work out ways to defer this cost for the student, it’s RYLA’s position that the student should have some investment.
After the 5 days of exercises, each student is expected to present on their experiences at their sponsoring Rotary club. After completion of RYLA, LaRoche College is offering a $20,000 scholarship contingent upon attendance at LaRoche and sustaining a necessary grade point average.
Volunteers and interested committee members can find more information here: http://www.rotaryyouth7300.org/

Presentation: Laura Almendinger – Ambassadorial Scholar
“The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors academic year scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.
“Generous contributions from Rotarians worldwide represent a continued faith that today’s Ambassadorial Scholars will be tomorrow's community and world leaders. “
Laura attended Loughborough University in England to earn her Masters in Renewable Energy Systems Technology. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Loughborough University is the top university for athletics in the United Kingdom, though they are focusing on growing their engineering program.
Laura’s host club was Loughborough Beacon in District 1070, where she spent her service time volunteering with the club at a local elementary school. When she returned home, she joined the Oakmont/Verona Rotary Club.
Laura was grateful for the opportunity to study abroad and looks forward to serving under Rotary in the future. If you have any questions for Laura regarding her study abroad or the Ambassadorial Scholarship program, you can contact her at

Currently our membership is at a "soft" 18. Let's make a push for a couple more commitments and we're on our way to chartering.
Cindy, our new district governor was introduced to the club and we spoke briefly about what our club's plans are and what we've currently got going on. Cindy's advice for membership is to find the "people who know everyone else". Cindy's official visit will be on August 3rd. We will get a letter regarding the protocol of that visit.
Sandy Grimes, the new assistant district governor was also introduced. Dave gave brief overviews of the "Taste of Southside" possible fundraiser and the informational kiosk at the entrance to Pittsburgh on the bike trail. Cindy informed us that we may be eligible for a district simplified grant in the future for this project.
Dave also spoke about our work with the Emmaus Community - Secret Santa, Land scaping, Furniture building, bowling events. The Bob Brindley Memorial Golf outing will be held on August 2nd at noon at the Pittsburgh National Golf Club. Bob, who passed away this winter, had 63 years of perfect attendence in Rotary. Ron Gaydos, the GSE team leader, came to speak to us about the recent GSE trip to Patagonia, Argentina.

President’s Report
- MiRan Surh, Kathy Crawford and Dave Trumbore helped two of the Emmaus Community residences with landscaping on Saturday, June 5th (pictures available)
- From this event came another service opportunity:
The new residence requests our help with a project to renovate their backyard by weeding, landscaping, building and placing furniture.
***Please respond to this email with dates that you’re available to help!!!***
I’d like to get this all done in a weekend but I know people’s schedules are filling up quickly. If a weeknight works better for you, please let me know as there are already some members planning on doing this.
- We’re considering donating $120 to the Emmaus Community to become members of their “Black & Gold Society,” which would be an annual contribution.
- In other news, the local branch of United American Savings Bank is going public and has extended an offer to the South Side Rotary Club to purchase shares. I invite Ben Contrucci, Dan Carlins and our advisors to participate in this discussion since it’s not my area of expertise.
